How Do I Get Work?

LA or Bust?

After 20 years in the entertainment game, I've learned one major thing: there's no single blueprint for success. Everyone's journey is as unique as they are. That's why I'm not about the "one-size-fits-all" vibe. I don't have all the answers, but I've got a ton of knowledge to share from my own experiences. Here are some resources to get you started – they're not complete, still evolving, and updated all the time. Because, honestly, we all deserve the info to forge our own paths in this crazy industry!

Every actor NEEDS a good headshot or 7. When first starting out, just trying to get a few that match your casting types is key. If you apply for a job at a bank, you would possibly go in a suit with a chic resume to your interview. Headshots for actors are the same...it's the business suit. Getting a professional shot is super important when submitting for gigs or looking for representation becuase it says that you mean business. But what exactly does that mean? Welp, check out this article below- great advice about the photos you need to get started!

How do you starting working as an actor? It's something I asked MANY people when I first started. I dug through craigslist ads, soured trade papers, googled directors. But the best way is to sign up for the first 3 websites below. ActorsAccess, Casting Networks, and Backstage are all legitimate websites where actors can submit themselves directly for gigs. If you're going for it- these are a must to have profiles with.

What's this thing? You probably already know...but IMDb is the thesaurus for anyone in the entertainment business. A public resume that is used by everyone!

The debate of whether you have to be in LA anymore for work is a constantly changing one. 10 years ago the answer was YES. Today, it's a solid maybe? Maybe not? With the pandemic, tax incentives from the states for filming and the availability of online casting, the game has completely changed. While I would recommend trying on big city pants to really learn the ropes if you are starting out, I realize that's not possible for everyone. BUT that also doesn't mean you can't still work as a professional actor. There are tons of local mid-city resources for actors...sometimes you just have to dig. Sign up below and request a Mid-West list of agencies/casting directors (this list doesn't cover Chicago though). It's a place to start when trying to find representatives or learn more about the local film communities.
